![]() We have two caring homes operating at full capacity of 20 beds, with long waiting lists: Fraternity House and Michaelle House. Our residents live in a home-like environment in which we provide them with housing, 24-hour comprehensive care, supervision of medication regimens, assistance with activities of daily living, nutritious home-cooked meals, clothing, transportation, and rehabilitation activities and emotional support. We own a wheel chair accessible van, and employ a part-time van driver to meet the transportation needs of residents including medical appointments and emergency care, social outings, and resident shopping trips. Our RCF-CI license requires us to provide Certified Nursing Assistants to care for our residents. Residents receive assistance with toileting and bathing, dental hygiene and skin care, bed changing and diapering, turning and positioning of the bed-bound, spoon feeding and hydrating, taking temps and assisting with medications, toweling off patients with night sweats, and ambulation. The loving care Fraternity House, Inc. provides for men and women disabled by AIDS significantly increases their survival rate. Many of our residents come to us with a limited prognosis, but after being in our care, approximately 38% of our residents are able to regain stabilized health and return to independent living. Fraternity House, Inc.’s services are in demand because we are the only licensed provider of transitional, chronic and hospice care all in one location. Rather than move from place to place, Fraternity House and Michaelle House become home. We encourage our residents to live as long and productive a life as possible. The residents we serve represent a cross-section of the population, including men and women, gay and straight, old and young, and are from various racial/ethnic backgrounds. All are very low-income women and men who are homeless or at immediate risk of becoming homeless, and all are physically or mentally disabled by AIDS. Our services are also preventative: without the housing we provide, there would be more homeless people on the streets in our community. The medical assistance and comprehensive care we provide alleviates the burden on our local hospitals and medical clinics. The emotional support and education residents receive helps them deal with their HIV Status, which greatly reduces the likelihood of infecting others with the virus. Most importantly, with adequate housing, nutrition and comprehensive care, the mortality rates of men and women disabled by AIDS decrease dramatically. |
